By Jenny Ryan Many times when I’m at the grocery or drug store, I can’t resist throwing a few scented votive candles in my cart. When I’m ready to burn them, it’s easy enough to sit one on a cute little vintage china saucer, but I recently decided to try and find a fancier display solution for them. I also wanted the project to be inexpensive, and the materials used to be things I already had on hand. I was inspired by memories of making faux-stained glass in elementary school and came up with these fun little glass votive holders. This project is quick and easy, and a great way to whip up custom party décor on the cheap.
Votiveholder Materials

Materials

Tissue paper in your desired colors
Mod Podge (matte finish),
in a pinch you can also use school glue
Paintbrush
Scissors
Glass containers to fit your candle(s),
I used thrifted vases and wine tumblers
Paper punches in various shapes
Q-tips,
optional

Directions

Votiveholder Step1
Step 1: Figure out what colors of tissue paper you’d like to use and what paper punch shapes you want to try out. You can go monochromatic, or choose a wide variety of colors for a playful confetti-style look. Punch out a nice little pile of paper shapes (you can always punch more if needed!) and set them aside.
Step 2: Scoop out a bit of Mod Podge with your paintbrush and water it down a bit so the texture is thinner. You don’t want it super drippy, just a bit thinned-out. I mixed it up right in the lid of the Mod Podge container.
Votiveholder Step3
Step 3: Start affixing the punched-out paper shapes to the glass using your paintbrush. Tissue paper is so thin that you can actually pick up the pieces using the wet paintbrush if you like. You could also brush Mod Podge onto the glass first, and then stick on the paper shapes. Either way, brush over the shapes afterward to fully saturate them with Mod Podge. Wet tissue paper can rip easily, so try not to get too rough with it. Take your time and brush gently, attaching more and more shapes, overlapping them however you prefer. Once your glass is fully covered, set it aside to dry.
Votiveholder Step4
Step 4: One your piece is dry, you’ll see that any areas you have brushed with Mod Podge that aren’t covered in tissue paper will have a frosted look. This doesn’t bother me, but if you would prefer these areas to be clear, simply dip a Q-tip in hot water and carefully scrub off the Mod Podge, as seen above.

Step 5: Once everything is dry, plunk in a votive candle, light the wick and enjoy! If you start building a stash of tissue paper – easy enough to do since scraps of it seem to show up around nearly every holiday – you’ll have a variety of colors on hand, making it easy enough to match your candles to any theme you can dream up. Have fun!

Mini Message Chalkboard

Lia Griffith has the most amazing blog. It’s quickly become one of my favorites, and you should visit it, too! I love her simple style and projects. Hope you enjoy this one.

A few months ago, when designing the entryway in my loft, I decided to include a message board to introduce guests to my shoe-free home. I had picked up an overly ornate gold and linen frame at a second hand store for next to nothing and found a piece of foam board easy to fit without needing power tools. I knew I wanted to paint the foam board with the chalkboard paint and without much thought, ended up painting the entire frame. I loved it! It had a stylish coffee shop look, understated yet interesting. You can see the finished message board in the photo below. Today I am sharing a tutorial on how to make a mini chalkboard that can hang over a door nob, on a wall or in a bookshelf. Initially I was imagining it being placed over a door nob with the words “baby sleeping”, but since my loft has sliding doors, I used mine to decorate a bookshelf. In any case, this mini message board can be a sweet little chalkboard sign that is great for many uses.

Mini Chalkboard

Here is the simple tutorial on how to make this mini chalkboard. You could use any color of paint for the frame if your do not want the tone on tone look. If your frame does not have the metal hoop on top, simply glue your ribbon behind the felt on the back of the frame. For this tutorial your supplies are: mini frame, foam board, felt, scissors, chalkboard paint, paint brush, hot glue gun, ribbon and chalk. Someday when I live in a home with a door nob, I will post a photo of my original inspiration.  Enjoy ~ Lia

Never Seduce a Scot: The Montgomerys and Armstrongs

Scottish historical romance is a tried and true genre for me, I can’t get enough of it. This is the first book by Maya Banks that I’ve read and I have to say, I will be reading the next book in this series.

Maya Banks, the New York Times bestselling author of erotic romance, romantic suspense, and contemporary romance, has captivated readers with her steamy Scottish historical novels, perfect for fans of Julie Garwood. Never Seduce a Scot features a remarkable woman whose rare gift teaches a gruff Scottish warrior how to listen with his heart.

Eveline Armstrong is fiercely loved and protected by her powerful clan, but outsiders consider her “touched.” Beautiful, fey, with a level, intent gaze, she doesn’t speak. No one, not even her family, knows that she cannot hear. Content with her life of seclusion, Eveline has taught herself to read lips and allows the outside world to view her as daft. But when an arranged marriage into a rival clan makes Graeme Montgomery her husband, Eveline accepts her dutyunprepared for the delights to come. Graeme is a rugged warrior with a voice so deep and powerful that his new bride can hear it, and hands and kisses so tender and skilled that he stirs her deepest passions.

Graeme is intrigued by the mysterious Eveline, whose silent lips are ripe with temptation and whose bright, intelligent eyes can see into his soul. As intimacy deepens, he learns her secret. But when clan rivalries and dark deeds threaten the wife he has only begun to cherish, the Scottish warrior will move heaven and earth to save the woman who has awakened his heart to the beautiful song of a rare and magical love.

Animal Magnetism (An Animal Magnetism Novel)

If you like light contemporary romance with a good dose of humor, try out the first book in the Animal Magnetism series by author Jill Shalvis.

“Co-owner of the town’s only kennel, Lilah Young has lived in Sunshine, Idaho, all her life. Pilot-for-hire Brady Miller is just passing through. But he soon has Lilah abandoning her instincts and giving in to a primal desire.
It’s Brady’s nature to resist being tied down, but there’s something about Lilah and her menagerie that keeps him coming back for more.”

I like almost any story with animals and this book has it’s share of entertaining four legged friends, as well as the two legged variety. Jill writes strong alpha males, with a hint of “broken” psyche. I enjoy her wit and this book had it’s share of giggles.

Have a great weekend! And get some reading done!

Planning a spring/summer wedding and in dire need of inspiration for a fun centerpiece? Jell-O the no calorie treat that brings out the kid in us can actually be used to decorate your reception tables! I saw this on rachelraymag.com and just had to share it with you. See below for the easy steps on how to make your own Jell-O centerpiece:

- Combine six boxes of Jell-O powder in half the amount of water specified (to get a more vibrant color).
- Chill the mix in your choice of vase for approximately 30 minutes.
- Push the flowers into the semi-firm gelatin.

And there you have it!
